Estate agents issue pleas over stamp duty

Wednesday, 20 Aug 2008

Estate agents in the Oxfordshire town of Henley have advocated a suspension of stamp duty as away of boosting the property market.

Richard Jackson of Jackson's Residential in the town told the Henley Standard: "Anything that might help put a boost back into the market has to be a good thing."

This view was shared by Paul Dalton from Dalton's estate agents, who told the same paper: "I think suspending stamp duty would be a good thing."

"But I am cynical about it and don't think it will happen," he added, explaining that he suspected the Treasury would not willingly forfeit the revenue from the tax.

If stamp duty remains in place, those seeking a mortgage quote may have extra reason to get the best deal they can to offset the additional housing transaction costs.

The uncertainty over the government's stamp duty intentions has led to one in four agents seeing at least one transaction fall through as buyers wait for a decision, a poll by the National Association of Estate Agents found last week.
